One of the very interesting carvings on the walls of the cathedral. This one is above the east door of the south transept.

When we first came here it was on May 8th 1997, but the gate to the St. Brigid's Cathedral was closed.
The tower stands in the northwest corner of the churchyard. The one in Kildare is one of the tallest round towers in Ireland, it's 31.80 metres tall and has a diameter of 4.30 metres. The rounded doorway faces southeast (130°) and is in Romanesque style with four orders. The innermost one is the best preserved, with nice carvings of lozanges and marigolds. The doorway is at 4.50 metres from the ground.
The top of the tower has a crenellation and there are five rounded windows at the top level.
The tower can be climbed to the top by paying a ticket, that at the time we came here was of € 4.00. The ticket booth was closed during our visit.
In this same page I'll show some photos of the St. Brigid's cathedral. The interior is really worth a visit because of the huge collection of early Christian and medieval carvings, but the cathedral was locked when we came here.
