The head of the promontory fort, looking west with the the Slieve League on the horizon.

This promontory fort wasn't in our list, but it was a nice surprise on the road between Kilcar and Killybegs.
The promontory is a narrow strip of rock with vertical cliffs on the Ocean. There are still traces of earthen banks and defensive stone walls.
The fort probably dates to 2,000 BC.
There are rumours that on this promontory, a castle had been built and that later the Murray-Hamilton estate possibly inhabitated it, though today no traces of it survive.
From this promontory we were able to see Slieve League in the distance, wrapped by the fog.
