The doorway in the northeast wall. On the day of our visit it was locked.

The ruins of this fascinating tower house stand off a local road in the countryside southwest of Ardrahan.

It is said it was built by the Kilkelly family at the beginning of the 16th century, but it is known that Shane Ballagh owned the castle in 1574.
The castle occupied in 1920 by the Black and Tans during the War of Independence. The British Forces caused heavy damages to the castle during the occupation. The castle was also the site for a bloody torture and murder of two brothers, both Sinn Féin members, whose bodies were mutilated and burned and dumped in a nearby pond.

The castle is a five-storey building, with the ground and second floor vaulted.
A spiral staircase in the the south-east corner takes up to the roof level.
The doorway is in the northeast (65°) wall. The tower house measures 8.30 metres on the northeast and southwest sides, and 9.75 metres on the northwest and southeast sides.
The OS Map marks the castle on the wrong side of the road.
